The Key Exploration chord and pentascale workbook covers all major and minor keys, with four progressive levels for students to work through.

What material is covered in this workbook?

Students will improve their finger independence and technique as they work on playing broken chords and pentascales. As they advance through the levels they will also learn thumb and finger crossover to prepare for octave scales.

In addition to the technical exercises, students will develop an understanding of all major and minor I chords and pentascales. This helps with learning how to transpose, improves pattern recognition, and provides a starting point for learning key signatures.

How are the levels organised?

The four different levels are based on the shape of the I chord (and the types of landmarks they resemble):

• Lake: level one includes chords with all white keys (with a shape that’s flat like a lake!)
• Mountain: level two has chords with two white keys and one black key in the middle (mountain shaped)
• River: the third level has a variety of different chord shapes (like a river can have lots of different shapes)
• Canyon: level four chords have two black keys and one white key in the middle (in the shape of a canyon)

This workbook is a reproducible digital product, and no physical product will be sent out.

What’s the difference between a printable licence and a digital licence?

With a printable licence teachers can print as many copies of the workbook as they like to use with their students. There are no limits to the number of copies that can be printed.
